THREE AND SIX AND FIVE

Interlude 2

It’s a slow Thursday night and this song just came on shuffle. The boy’s taking a nap and his arm is draped over my lap. He looks pensive when he sleeps, like he’s solving a problem or watching Fellini. In the cab the other night, he was explaining to me how it was possible to break glass when sound reached extremely high pitches, but only when the frequency and wavelength of the sound and the glass matched. “Not all glass will break to opera.” I’m learning little things from him: how to open juice bottles with one hand, how to assemble GI Joes, but mostly how to be calm and patient. We got into a fight last night and he passed out on the couch mid-argument. I hate alcohol, I told him over and over, and then he pulled me close and stroked my hair as he repeated softly: Keep steady, keep steady. We woke up with kinder eyes and the calmness in the room was a frequency that broke a war.
