I go to the old places but I don’t see you in the park benches, the bike trails, the picnic steps and the blinding sunclouds at dusk, the football field and spilled watermelon shakes, the dusty old buildings and the rust under the hood of your car, or the imperial drive-thru, the incandescent grocery cart before a movie night, the movie night and the misunderstanding of characters after that, the moth-eaten pillows and the soft old sheets on your bed, your bed and the shape I leave behind when I wake up and drink a glass of water in the too-early kitchen. This time, I don’t tiptoe back.
